How It Works

IAAF Scoring Formula

Track: Points = A × (B - T)^C

Field: Points = A × (D - B)^C

Example - Men's 100m:

A = 25.4347, B = 18, C = 1.81

For 10.50 seconds:

Points = 25.4347 × (18 - 10.50)^1.81 = 983 points

The 2001 IAAF Combined Events Scoring Tables are used worldwide for official competitions. The formulas are calibrated so elite performances earn approximately 1,000 points per event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Points are calculated using the IAAF Combined Events Scoring Tables. Each event uses a formula: for track events, Points = A × (B - P)^C where P is performance in seconds; for field events, Points = A × (P - B)^C where P is performance in centimeters. The coefficients A, B, and C are specific to each event.

The decathlon (men) consists of 10 events over two days. Day 1: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m. Day 2: 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500m. Events alternate between running and field events.

The heptathlon (women) has 7 events over two days. Day 1: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m. Day 2: long jump, javelin, 800m. It replaced the pentathlon as the women's combined event in 1981.

For decathlon: 8,000+ is international class, 7,500+ is national level, 6,500+ is strong collegiate. For heptathlon: 6,000+ is international class, 5,500+ is national level, 5,000+ is strong collegiate. World records are 9,126 (Mayer) and 7,291 (Joyner-Kersee).

The scoring tables are designed so that a world-class performance in any event earns roughly the same points (around 1,000). This means specialists and all-rounders are equally rewarded for their best events.
